CIPHET Ludhiana

The Central Institute of Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET) is a premier institute of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). An ISO 9001:2015 certified institute, it carries out quality research on various aspects of agricultural commodities such as their post-harvest processing, preservation, storage and value addition.

It was established on the 3rd of October, 1989 with the mandate of undertaking lead research in Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology in the areas of agricultural production catchment and agro-industries. In a world where land (particularly agricultural land) is not just an expensive commodity but a rare one too, it is the dire need of the hour to boost agricultural output so as to be able to fulfil as well as augment the food requirements of the entire human population of the world. In essence, that is what CIPHET aspires for.

The mission of the Institute

Two of the biggest reasons for poor agricultural output in our country are loss of crop produce after the harvest and lack of value addition to the crop produce in the form of by-products. CIPHET’s mission is to create prosperity amongst the farming and agriculturist community by minimizing post-harvest losses from 15 per cent to 5 per cent and bringing about an increase in the value addition of harvested crops from the present 10 per cent level to 30 per cent by extracting useful by-products from crops, horticulture, livestock and fisheries.

Besides, the Institute aims to work towards ensuring better income for farmers by working towards achieving higher profitability from agricultural production systems. Generating new employment opportunities in the rural sector is another objective that CIPHET is striving to achieve.

The key thrust areas in which CIPHET is doing an unparalleled job are: –

  1. Post-harvest technologies for a reduction in losses
  2. Value addition technologies
  3. Technology transfer, entrepreneurship development and marketing
  4. By-product utilization and waste management
  5. Improvement of agricultural structures
  6. Biotechnology in PHTS
  7. Environment control for higher productivity
  8. Livestock produce processing.

Various Divisions of the institute

The Central Institute of Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology has five major divisions, namely: –

  1. The Agricultural Structures & Environmental Control Division
  2. The Food Grains & Oilseeds Processing Division
  3. The Transfer of Technology Division
  4. The Horticultural Crop Processing Division
  5. The Automation & Sensor Technology Division

Services provided

  • One of the objectives of setting up the CIPHET, Ludhiana was to organize several Research and Development programmers. To fulfil this objective, an array of state-of-the-art instruments has been made available for carrying out advanced research. This initiative of the CIPHET has been named Sophisticated Analytical Instruments Facility (SAIF). These facilities are open to being availed by farmers, industry owners, students, entrepreneurs, and researchers, that too at a very nominal charge.
  • Besides providing sophisticated instruments for use to the public, CIPHET Ludhiana also offers consultancy services to interested parties.

Achievements

Since its inception in 1989, CIPHET has developed about thirty-five processing equipment. As for the research publications of the scientists of the Institute, a total of ninety-nine research papers have been published in International journals, while one hundred and twenty-one have been published in National journals. Apart from this, the scientists have authored as many as twelve books and have contributed twenty-two chapters in different books and published about 32 technical/extension bulletins.

Having proved their mettle in the fields of developing equipment, publishing research papers in National and International journals, authoring books, and contributing chapters in various books, the scientific staff of CIPHET also proved their commitment to quality work by securing as many as twenty-five patents.
