It appears that taxi drivers are continuously Redbridge cab services from all sides, and we’ve lately learned of a new problem: unlawful taxi or “lift providing” services on social media platforms. Sites like Facebook and Twitter have grown in popularity in recent years, increasing these “lift providing” businesses.
Guernsey Police have initiated an investigation into two Facebook sites called “Jersey Lifts” and “Guernsey Lifts,” which provide transportation to local citizens to popular venues like pubs and nightclubs. Anyone can use the platform to give rides to strangers they meet on the internet, which is not only unlawful but also dangerous. The pages’ proprietors, on the other hand, argue that their popularity stems from the fact that they provide a less expensive option to licensed Redbridge cab taxis.
Furthermore, because they are not paying taxi insurance or license fees, those who provide lifts through Facebook sites might make hundreds of pounds in a single weekend. “I understand cab drivers are angry with this, it’s their livelihood, and I appreciate that,” one of the sites’ owners told an ITV News reporter. We merely provide a service; whether individuals use it or take a taxi is entirely up to them. Before we even post it on Facebook, we’re frequently asked whether we can help with a lift! We can easily undercut taxis on pricing.
“It’s nearly tough for the cops to catch and establish that people are doing this.” The only way to prove it is to see them physically hand up the money, but anyone familiar with the laws and their rights can readily refute this. Many of the lifts I provide are to folks I know. Sometimes it’s a stranger, but how frequently do you recognize the driver of a taxi? So availability and cost are the key reasons why people use Jersey Lifts; it’s cheaper and faster to use Jersey Lifts.”
Redbridge cab drivers are understandably upset about the Facebook groups, with Danny Kevan, a thirty-year taxi driver in Jersey, saying: “These people are jumping into cars with unlicensed drivers and unregulated vehicles, where the insurance is invalid.” As a result, on their journey home, they’re playing Russian Roulette with their safety.”
“We are aware that illegal taxi services continue to be marketed on Facebook,” Guernsey police said in a statement. These services extend beyond friends giving one other ride in exchange for gas money. Drivers who operate in this manner are not insured to do so, and they risk receiving a hefty fine and a driving prohibition. We would advise islanders, particularly ladies, to avoid taking illegal taxis with unknown drivers.”
However, it’s difficult to prosecute these unlawful ride-sharing businesses because their fees are so much cheaper than those charged by regulated taxi drivers. Taxi drivers must, unfortunately, meet the expense of outgoings such as regular automobile maintenance and taxi license premiums by charging more for their services, but their clients can rest assured that they are safe.
